Oguri Shun is the youngest of three, son of the stage director Oguri Tetsuya and younger brother of the actor Oguri Ryo, and he began as an extra in productions the two of them were working on. His parents settled on the name after a fortune teller told them it would bring the boy good luck. He was in children's theatre at eleven and on television at thirteen, in NHK's "Hachidai Shogun Yoshimune" (1995); "GTO" made him a teen idol in 1998; then in 1999 he stopped acting to concentrate on school and baseball, and in 2000 left school instead, auditioning for the part of a deaf man in TBS's "Summer Snow". That performance was the one that got him taken seriously.

"Hana Yori Dango" (2005) made him a star. He plays Hanazawa Rui, the quiet one of the F4 — and he got the part because Matsumoto Jun told the production he would not appear unless Oguri did. The princely image that came with it was not what he wanted, so he spent the next few years deliberately away from it, in "Sakuran", "Kisaragi", "Sukiyaki Western Django" and "Crows Zero", which won him Best Actor at the Japan Movie Critics Awards in 2008.

He has taken Best Actor at the Television Drama Academy Awards twice, for "Rich Man, Poor Woman" (2012) and "Border" (2014), and again at both the Hochi Film Awards and the Nikkan Sports Film Awards for "Tsumi no Koe" (2020). He was Shinichi Kudo in the first live-action "Detective Conan" film, the title role in "Lupin the Third" (2014), and both a high-school boy and Oda Nobunaga in "Nobunaga Concerto". He directed his first feature, "Surely Someday", in 2010, and made his Hollywood debut in "Godzilla vs. Kong" (2021). In 2025 he led "Romantics Anonymous", a Korean-Japanese co-production for Netflix, opposite Han Hyo Joo.

He hosted his own slot on All Night Nippon from 2007, where listeners nicknamed him Shunkerbelle, supports the Hanshin Tigers, and moved his family to the United States in 2019. In 2023 he was made president of Tristone Entertainment, the agency he has belonged to throughout.
