KOREAN DRAMA

Synopsis

Is it better to live forever or to finally be able to die?

Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is a decorated military general during the Goryeo Dynasty who is betrayed by the jealous king he served. When Kim Shin is faced with death instead of honor after fighting a mighty battle, God turns Kim Shin into a goblin instead, tasked with protecting certain people from the life of misery. But immortality is wearing on Kim Shin, and he longs to find the prophesied human bride who can set his soul free.

Kim Shin becomes accidental roommates with Wang Yeo (Lee Dong Wook), the grim reaper who ushers people's souls into the afterlife. Kim Shin's nephew, Yoo Deok Hwa (Yook Sung Jae), is a rebellious chaebol heir whose family has been caretakers of the goblin for many generations. Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) is a high school senior whose mother was saved from an accident by Kim Shin 19 years ago, and ever since then, she has been able to communicate with the dead. Sunny (Yoo In Na), the owner of a chicken restaurant and Eun Tak's boss, crosses path with Wang Yeo and becomes smitten with him.

Can Eun Tak be the true "goblin bride" with the power to release Kim Shin from his eternal misery?

NOTES & VARIETIES

Its final episode drew an 18.68% nationwide share, at the time the fifth-highest figure in the history of Korean cable television.
It took the timeslot left by "The K2" and was followed by "Tomorrow With You" on February 3, 2017.
The first script reading was held on August 30, 2016 at Nuri Dream Square in Sangam-dong, Seoul; filming began that September.
The Goryeo scenes were shot at Gimje in North Jeolla Province and at Naju Image Theme Park, and the house Kim Shin shares with the Grim Reaper is the Western House of the former Unhyeongung, now inside Duksung Women's University.
Overseas filming took place in Quebec City in October 2016 — the Château Frontenac, Petit Champlain, whose red door is the goblin's door to Canada, and the Fontaine de Tourny. The locations have drawn fans of the series ever since.
It is Kim Eun Sook's second drama with director Lee Eung Bok, after Descendants of the Sun.
Kim Eun Sook had already worked with Kim Sung Kyum and Yoo In Na on "Secret Garden".
Hwang Suk Jung and Kim Go Eun had worked together on "Cheese in the Trap".
It is the second time Lee Dong Wook and Park Hee Bon worked together, after "Bubblegum".
Kim So Hyun and Yook Sung Jae had worked together on "Who Are You - School 2015".
Ryu Hwa Young was in talks for the role of Sunny but turned it down, feeling she was too young for the part.
On its premiere it out-rated "Reply 1988", until then the highest-rated drama tvN had launched.
Counting subscription platform figures alongside cable, it broke through 14% to reach 15.55%.
Episode 14 did not air on January 14 as originally planned. A special episode went out in its place, going deeper into how the story resolves, and episodes 15 and 16 both aired the following week on the same day.
With a peak of 22.1% it is the second highest-rated drama in tvN's history, behind "Crash Landing on You".
The soundtrack was compiled into a two-disc album — one CD of songs, the other of instrumentals — released on January 25, with pre-orders in Korea from January 17. Gong Yoo's narrations are included, along with a photo book of previously unseen stills. Two versions were sold, differing only in the lenticular cover images and the flip book scenes.
On the back of the show's popularity, tvN aired a two-episode special of behind-the-scenes footage, bloopers and interviews on February 3 and 4.
In the December 26 episode of tvN's "The List 2016", a rundown of the best bromances in entertainment placed Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook third — noting their friendship actually began in the army.
Lee Sun Gyun sent a food truck for the whole crew. He had worked with Gong Yoo on "The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince" and with Kim Go Eun on "The Advocate: A Missing Body".
A few weeks before the drama's first anniversary, the OST track "Stay With Me" by Punch and Chan Yeol of EXO passed 100 million plays on YouTube — the first and only OST to manage it.
The school Ji Eun Tak attends in episode 1 is the same one seen at the start of GFRIEND's "Rough" video.
The pavement where the goblin and Eun Tak meet in the rain in episode 1 is the same one that appears in "Winter Sonata".
In episode 2, the scene Lee Dong Wook watches on television is from "Bubblegum", which he headlined.
Episode 3 features a performance by iKON, and Kim Shin dancing the chorus of I.O.I's "Pick Me" — which plays again in episode 4 as Yoo Deok Hwa drives Eun Tak to school.
In episode 4, when the goblin makes Eun Tak get out of the car and they find themselves in Canada, crew members are visible in the rear-view mirror.
In episode 5, at 22:46, rain falls only on the car Eun Tak and the goblin are sitting in.
MAMAMOO's "Décalcomanie" plays in the cafe scene in episode 6, BTS's "Boy in Luv" and EXO's "Growl" are danced by Secretary Kim in episode 9, BLACKPINK's "Stay" plays while the reapers drink coffee in episode 11, and Yoo Deok Hwa hums TWICE's "T.T" while sweeping in episode 12.
The cinema scene in episode 7 shows footage from "Train to Busan".
The house and staircase in episode 13, where the reaper tells Kim Shin about Eun Tak's new date of death, are the same ones as the aikido school in "Full House TAKE 2".
