Choi Won Young was born Choi Sung Wook, studied stage design at Sangmyung University and took a master's in advertising and public relations at Hongik, and made his acting debut in "Sex Is Zero" in 2002. He has worked steadily in both film and television since, mostly in supporting parts and increasingly in the ones that turn a drama: "While You Were Sleeping" (2011), "A Hundred Year Legacy" (2013), "The Heirs" (2013) as Yoon Jae Ho, the low-budget thriller "Your Time Is Up", which premiered at Busan in 2012, and "Hello Monster" (2015), where he is the escaped prisoner Lee Joon Young twenty years on, living under another man's name.

He took Best Supporting Actor at the 2017 KBS Drama Awards for "Mad Dog" and "Hwarang" together, an Excellence Award for "Doctor Prisoner" in 2019, and a Best Character prize at the MBC Drama Awards for "The Golden Spoon" in 2022. He was also in "Sky Castle". He sings for his own dramas — "Susanna's Handkerchief" and "I'm Coming", both for "Laurel Tree Tailors".

He met the actress Shim Yi Young on "A Hundred Year Legacy", where the two of them played a married couple, and married her in February 2014. They have two daughters. He paints in his spare time.
