Ahn Jae Hyun was turned down by a modelling academy — too ugly, he was told, and he should have work done on his eyes and his nose. He entered a competition more or less by accident, won it, and started modelling in 2009 instead. He walked shows and shot editorials and commercials for four years, took Best New Model at the Asia Fashion Model Awards in 2009 and Best Fashion Model at the Asian Model Festival Awards in 2013, and turned up in music videos for Baek A Yeon, K.Will and Sistar19. A stint as the handsome delivery man on JTBC's "High Society" in 2011 got him noticed.

"My Love from the Star" (2013) put him on television properly, as Cheon Yoon Jae, Song Yi's teenage brother, and won him a New Star Award at the SBS Drama Awards and Best New Actor at the Korea Drama Awards. He hosted M Countdown, took a lead in "You're All Surrounded" and the film "Fashion King" in 2014, and in 2015 got his first leading role: Park Ji Sang, the vampire surgeon in "Blood", a year after he had started acting at all.

"Cinderella with Four Knights" (2016) — an arrogant chaebol playboy — brought him the Top Excellence Award and the Global Star Award at the Korea Drama Awards and Best Actor at the Macau International Television Festival. He replaced Lee Seung Gi on the travel show "New Journey to the West" when Lee enlisted, and made two films in China. Since then: "Reunited Worlds" (2017), "The Beauty Inside" (2018), "Love with Flaws" (2019) and "The Real Has Come!" (2023), which took him a Popularity Award and a Best Couple prize at the KBS Drama Awards. He published a photo essay, "List of Things to Remember", in 2022, and gave ten million won from the accompanying exhibition to children orphaned by the pandemic.
